MEDCO leader named top 50 economic developer in the nation

Marshall’s own Economic Development Corporation Executive Director, Donna Maisel, has made the prestigious Consult Connect’s “2018 list of North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers.”

“I’m just extremely honored to be included in the listing of the top 50 in the nation by this organization,” Maisel said Monday.

“One of the things about all of this is it takes all of us to make something happen together as a team, but what I’m most excited about is hopefully this will bring more attention to Marshall, as a whole, and that we will begin to gain more national attention for business recruitment for the community,” she said.

The Top 50 Economic Developers list is created by Consultant Connect, a consulting agency designed to bridge the gap between economic developers and site consultants. According to the agency, the economic development professionals selected for this list were nominated by their colleagues in both the economic development industry and the site consultant community for excellent practices, innovation and success in building the communities they serve.

“This annual list recognizing North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers is designed to acknowledge the hard work of the top leaders in this field and elevate the conversation around economic development and job creation,” said Ron Kitchens, managing partner of Consultant Connect. “Each of the leaders represented on this year’s list are beyond deserving of this recognition for their efforts in building our communities.”

Maisel, who has been in Marshall for 10 years as the head of MEDCO, said when she first came to the community, she recognized the tremendous opportunity it had for growth.

“That’s what excited me about becoming a part of the community,” she said.

“And with that, we’ve had many business expansions, recruitment of companies like Mann Lake and Rio,” she added, “but the opportunity that it brought to bring in these companies and work with them and have a positive community product to offer these companies in land and natural resources, location on the interstate and Highway 59, the future I-69 and workforce training with TSTC and the other institutions in town — all of those things have been aspects of Marshall that are a positive for the community and that should be even more promotional on a national level. This recognition will help us with that as well.

“So it’s recognition for the community and not just me,” Maisel said of her recognition, sharing how excited she is for Marshall, as a whole.

Looking to the future, Maisel said the most important focus of economic developers should be the ability to quickly adapt and change with the needs of business, industry and workforce training trends while keeping a keen eye on long range strategic goals.

“Success is when all the members of our organization work as a team, having learned the importance of continued future growth to our area and how to assist in business retention/expansion and recruitment of new industry,” she believes.

What inspires Maisel is when the action or input of MEDCO makes a positive impact on the community.

“It drives me to want to serve others even more,” she said.

According to Consult Connect, each top 50 economic developer on the 2018 list will be featured individually from September 17 through November 30 through the selected social media channels of LinkedIn and Twitter.

“Each of the award winners will share their expertise in the field and a few leadership insights they have learned along the way,” Connect officials noted. “Consultant Connect strives to lift up this industry by recognizing the remarkable economic developers for the entire economic community to learn from.”

Each recipient will receive their award at Consultant Connect’s ECONOMIX event in Nashville this December.
